The architect of Casa Verdi was Camillo Boito, son of Arrigo Boito. The courtyard contains a monument depicting Arrigo Boito, and both Giuseppe Verdi and his second wife, Giuseppina Strepponi, are buried in the crypt. Three days after he died, on January 30, 1901, in accordance with his wishes to avoid fuss, Verdi's body was secretly taken at dawn and buried in a temporary grave. Then on February 27, both the bodies of Verdi and Giuseppina Strepponi were escorted to their final resting place in the crypt in the Casa di Riposo. Twenty-eight thousand mourners followed the funeral cortege. "Va pensiero sull'ali dorate" (Go, my thought, on golden wings, from Nabucco) was softly sung by the assembled masses.
